Sure, most of us wish we had got here sooner. But the fact is that it usually takes quite a beating for us to fully realize and accept just how powerless we alcoholics are over alcohol.
Many of us early in life realized that once we took a drink, this thing we call "the phenomena of craving" kicks in, and we wanted more. This often led to many of the unpleasant consequences we experienced from our drinking. The answer to this would seem simple, just don't drink. Most of us heard this advice from well meaning friends and family members.
But for us alcoholics, there is also this mental obsession. This tightening of some internal spring that demands relief. It's like we are being held under water and told not to breathe. We have to breathe, even if we know it will kill us.
Thankfully, there is a solution to this seemingly hopeless state. It is available in the
12 step program of action found in Alcoholics Anonymous. Those of us who have recovered can promise you, that no matter how bad things may be right now, the best years of your life lie before you, should you choose to follow the path we have taken.
We sincerely would love to hear from you. Part of our own continued sobriety is dependent on trying to be helpful to other alcoholics.
