"Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other, that they might solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism."
AA could be said to be composed of two parts;
The fellowship of meeting with people who share a common solution to their common problem.
The practical program of action that makes up that solution.
AA groups meet regularly, with the primary purpose of sharing the message of hope and recovery from alcoholism with the newcomer.
Your privacy is always respected, and your level of involvement is strictly voluntary.
All those with the desire to recover from alcoholism are welcome.
There are two basic types of AA meetings, open and closed.
Closed meetings are limited to attendance by those wishing to recover from alcoholism.
Non-alcoholics may attend open meetings as observers.
According to our co-founder, Bill W.;
"Sobriety, through the teaching of the 12 steps, is the sole purpose of the AA group."
The practical program of action summarized by the 12 steps is laid out in detail in our basic text, commonly referred to as the "Big Book".
It is a simple yet extremely effective method for bringing about the internal change that gives us "victory over alcohol".
In short, to be sober AND to be happy about it!
